This is the 90's retro anime variant of the original painting, inspired by the cityscapes shown in Sailor Moon and other anime from the time.

It’s been a while since I uploaded some new artwork, so I’m excited to share this with you! I’m slowly expanding my portfolio of paintings inspired by my travels in Japan. This view is painted from a photo I took on Christmas Eve in Tokyo back in 2019. I was on a hunt for Christmas markets in Tokyo and found one at the Roppongi Hills mall. Admission was free and I was amazed by the amount of classic German Christmas inspiration they had in all of the decor, products, and food offerings. I enjoyed some gluhwein (hot spiced wine) while overlooking this impressive cityscape, with the magnificent red of Tokyo Tower dominating the scene, and almost every square inch of the trees lining the street below covered in bluish-white light. There was another Christmas market at the base of Tokyo Tower but I found this one to be more pleasant. This is my first time painting a more modern city view in the old shin-hanga style and I’m quite pleased with how it adapted!

I was so lucky to make it to Japan when I did that year. If I had held off just a few months, all travel was disrupted due to the pandemic for another year and a half to come.

The script reads:
